Description

Description
The Romanian National Hub of the CMA will host The Algae Forum: Awareness, Potential, and Local Partnerships on Monday 25 May 2026 in Constanța. The event will bring together stakeholders from higher education, research institutions, enterprises, civil society organisations and local and regional authorities to explore the ecological and economic potential of algae within the blue economy.

The forum will highlight the role of algae in sustainable marine aquaculture and provide a space for local actors to exchange knowledge, identify barriers to growth and contribute to the future strategy of the C-Quest (Coastal Communities Quest for Sustainable Aquaculture Transition) project.

About the Event

Algae offer significant opportunities for climate mitigation, sustainable food systems, and circular blue-economy solutions. At the same time, the sector faces regulatory, technical, and market-related challenges that limit its development.
The event will focus on:

  • Promoting the ecological and economic benefits of algae-based aquaculture
  • Mapping the current algae and aquaculture landscape in Romania
  • Identifying regulatory, technical and supply-chain bottlenecks
  • Gathering actionable insights to inform the future strategy of the C-Quest project
  • Strengthening cooperation and partnerships among local stakeholders

The programme includes presentations from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mare Nostrum NGO, the National Institute for Marine Research and Development (NIMRD), the Administration of the Danube-Black Sea Canal (ABADL) and research partners, followed by an interactive World Café workshop.

Expected results:

  • A shared outline of the current algae and aquaculture landscape in Romania
  • A prioritised list of bottlenecks affecting sustainable sector growth
  • Actionable recommendations to support the next phase of the C-Quest project
  • Strengthened cooperation among local and regional stakeholders
  • Increased awareness of algae’s ecological and economic potential
