EMD 2026: Bring European Maritime Day to your country

EMD 2026: Bring European Maritime Day to your country

Author: Black Sea Assistance Mechanism

#EMDinMyCountry is the decentralised dimension of European Maritime Day, the EU’s annual flagship event for maritime affairs and the sustainable blue economy. Through locally organised, grassroots initiatives, EMD in My Country brings ocean-related topics closer to citizens, coastal communities, and stakeholders across Europe and neighbouring regions.

In 2026, EMD will take place in Larnaka, Cyprus, from 21 to 23 May, while EMD in My Country events will once again unfold throughout the year across countries and regions. These local events play a key role in promoting ocean literacy, ocean stewardship, and awareness of the sustainable blue economy, from land to sea.

What is EMD in My Country?

EMD in My Country events are organised by local actors, including public authorities, NGOs, schools, research institutions, businesses, and community organisations. Activities can take many forms, such as workshops, seminars, exhibitions, educational visits, beach clean-ups, cultural events, or seafood fairs. Each event contributes to strengthening the connection between citizens and the ocean, highlighting its environmental, social, and economic importance.

With one-third of the EU population living within 50 km of the coast and over 68,000 km of coastline, seas and oceans are central to Europe’s identity, economy, and wellbeing. EMD in My Country events help make this connection visible and tangible, particularly for younger audiences, through interactive and inclusive initiatives.

Objectives of EMD in My Country

EMD in My Country aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of the ocean and its impact on daily life and wellbeing

  • Promote a better understanding of the blue economy and its social and economic dimensions

  • Highlight the vital role of seas and oceans for coastal communities and regional development

In 2026, the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Mr Costas Kadis, may attend a selection of EMD in My Country events as part of his ongoing dialogue with stakeholders and coastal communities.
