On 15 May 2026, Georgia’s National Hub organised the national event “Georgia’s Role in Black Sea Pollution Prevention” in Batumi, within the framework of the Common Maritime Agenda (CMA) for the Black Sea. Held in a hybrid format, the event brought together representatives from government institutions, the maritime sector, academia, the private sector and civil society to discuss how Georgia can contribute to reducing pollution and supporting a cleaner, more sustainable Black Sea.
The national event focused on key challenges and opportunities related to marine and air pollution prevention, highlighting the importance of coordinated action at national and regional levels. Discussions explored the role of public authorities in implementing pollution-prevention policies and initiatives, the value of the CMA as a framework for cooperation, and the growing importance of digital tools in environmental monitoring and decision-making.
A dedicated session presented Georgia’s ongoing digital transformation efforts in the maritime sector, showcasing how data, digital systems and improved institutional coordination can strengthen pollution monitoring, reporting and compliance. Participants also exchanged views on the need for stronger collaboration between public institutions, businesses, research organisations and civil society to address shared environmental challenges across the Black Sea basin.
The programme featured contributions from representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia, and the CMA Georgia National Hub, fostering dialogue and raising awareness among stakeholders. The event concluded with an interactive discussion session, which reaffirmed the importance of continued stakeholder engagement, alignment with regional and international standards, and active participation in CMA initiatives.
Overall, the event provided a valuable platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange, strengthening awareness of pollution-prevention priorities and reinforcing Georgia’s commitment to protecting the Black Sea environment through cooperation, innovation and sustainable maritime governance.
