Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE)

The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for environment and climate action.

It is divided in two strands, environment and climate action, to help the EU to reach its Green Deal ambitions.

The environment strand has two sub-programmes:

a. Nature and biodiversity

b. Circular economy and quality of life

The climate action strand also has two sub-programmes:

c. Climate change mitigation and adaptation

d. Clean energy transition (continuation of H2020 Energy Efficiency market uptake)

LIFE will publish two multi-annual work programmes for 2021-2024 and 2025-2027, which Will include details on:

- Sub-programmes

- Funding allocation

- Type of Projects and co-financing rates

- Selection procedures and awarding criterio

- Call for Proposals guidelines

Goal I:  Healthy marine and coastal ecosystems /  Priority 1: Ensure the protection and sustainability of the marine ecosystem

Key conditions

Any entity registered in the EU can make a proposal for LIFE traditional, integrated, preparatory, and technical assistance projects under the sub-programmes for environment and climate action, such as

  • public body operating under a national government’s authority, e.g. local authority, national administration etc.
  • private commercial organisation
  • private non-commercial organisation (NGOs etc.)

The overall budget for the implementation of the LIFE programme 2021-2027 will be EUR 5.432 billion.
