On October 26 2023, Bulgaria hosted in Varna their 2nd National event of the year, "Blue Skills for the Future - Challenges, Career Opportunities and Prospects in the Blue Economy," known as Blue Careers Day.
The event featured an insightful address from the Bulgarian Minister of Innovation and Growth emphasising the collaborative efforts between businesses, educational institutions, academia and NGOs to advance high technologies and innovation across various maritime sectors. Speakers from the Ministry of Innovation and Growth, national authorities, academia, regional policy makers and public sector professionals engaged in inspiring discussions, setting the tone for a day focused on the future of the blue economy in the country.
A diverse audience of 211 participants attended, representing academia, policy decision-makers, national authorities, NGOs, private companies, regional networks, research organizations, and students from universities and high schools. The agenda presented a mix of interactive sessions, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Key issues were addressed, including brain drain, the role of dual training, coping with digitalisation and green transformation, and building and retaining talent. For students attending, the day was tailored with interactive sessions for future career development and networking.
The event operated as a “marketplace” for skills development, career orientation, sharing of success stories, and meetings with professionals in traditional and emerging sectors of the blue economy. It was complemented by an exhibition showcasing companies, science and educational institutions, offering individual bilateral meetings to facilitate meaningful connections with students and pupils.
In conclusion, Blue Careers Day was not just an event but a celebration of the diverse talents and skills of people across all generations around the topic of sustainable blue economy in Bulgaria.
