Description

As conflicts continue to reshape the geopolitical landscape, they also leave lasting scars on the environment. The ongoing Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the related military activity have introduced alarming risks to marine ecosystems in the Black Sea, threatening biodiversity, livelihoods, and regional sustainability.

This has become an integral part of the work plan of the Common Maritime Agenda, specifically under the Ukrainian CMA Coordination in 2025.

Join us for a dedicated roundtable focused on war-related pollution in the Black Sea. This open dialogue will bring together researchers, policymakers, civil society, and affected stakeholders to examine the environmental consequences of the warfare, identifying monitoring and mitigation priorities, while fostering regional cooperation.

By supporting dialogue and the exchange of knowledge, this meeting aims to tackle the far-reaching environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine, share main findings from projects like RESPONSE, EU4EMBLAS, and Black Sea Sierra, and explore pathways for effective solutions and joint initiatives. Ultimately, this discussion seeks to identify priorities for future action within the framework of the Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea to mitigate the detrimental impacts of war on the region's marine environment.

🔍 What to Expect:

  • Informed discussion on pollution from military activity, including munitions, infrastructure damage, and chemical contamination
  • Regional and international perspectives on ecological monitoring and risk assessment
  • Space for cross-sector collaboration and joint response strategies
